“The Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.”
“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” - Zephaniah 3:17
Our relationship with our earthly fathers can impact our posture toward the image of God as a heavenly Father. Maybe your dad set a great example of protection, provision, and making your relationship a priority. Others of you might have experienced abandonment, abuse, or absence from the one who should have cared for you. The concept of God as Father can be reassuring or complicated depending on our childhood examples.
No matter what kind of relationship we had with our earthly father, Christ-followers all share a perfect Father God who rejoices over us as His children. The prophet Zephaniah wrote words of judgment to the nation of Israel for their many sins, but he also reminded them of God’s tender father-love for His people. We see the Lord’s character in this verse as One who is present - He is with us. A by-product of His presence includes protection because He is also a Mighty Warrior. As you think about your current challenges, you can know that your heavenly Father is with you and is fighting for you!
These verses go even a step further. We know that believers are called to delight in God (Psalm 37:4) and sing to Him (Psalm 96:1), but Zephaniah’s prophecy reveals that God delights in us and even sings over us. Close your eyes and picture that for a moment. Your heavenly Father delights in you (even with all your mess-ups and struggles). He sent His only Son to redeem you. He sings songs over you with joy.
As we embrace the love of God our Father, we find hope in the midst of our struggles. He knows all that is going on in our world and offers us not only His presence but His delight.
Rest in these truths today – the God of the universe sees you. He is with you. He delights in you and sings over you with joy!
God you are a good Father. It blows my mind to know that you take delight in me and even sing over me. Help me to see you as a loving Father who has restored our relationship through the blood of your Son. I want to know you more as I embrace the truths you reveal in your Word.
Take this devotional a step further and share it with the children or students that you are intentionally discipling each week.
Parents have the incredible responsibility of giving their children a first glimpse of what their Heavenly Father is like. The way we view God as adults can often be similar to the way we viewed our parents when we were children.
How do your children see you? Compassionate? Forgiving? Accepting? Judgmental? Hard to please? Take some time to reflect on the kind of parent you are and how that can impact the way your children view their Heavenly Father.
