“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
In His last hours, Jesus dealt cleanly and swiftly with Pilate. Pilate was under the illusion that he was in control of this trial, that he actually had authority over this Jew from Nazareth. Jesus cut to the core of this governor’s identity struggle; his need for affirmation that he is succeeding in climbing up the corporate ladder of authority and control. Jesus corrected the governor’s org chart and told him who held the authority over His life. This is the day that Christ-followers around the world recognize and remember Jesus’ willingness to suffer and to die so that those who believe in Him may know joy in suffering and hope for eternal life.
"When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God and all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood."
