Ephesians 2:1–3

Key Verse:
“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.”

*Here, Paul is saying that people weren’t just struggling—they were guilty of knowingly disobeying God’s ways.*

Have you ever had a moment where you felt totally helpless? Maybe your car died in the middle of nowhere, and your phone was dead. You’re stuck. No power. No options. That’s the picture Paul paints here – but on a spiritual level. Before Christ, we weren’t just lost or confused – we were spiritually dead. Not sick or weak. Dead. And dead people can’t fix themselves.

Death is a heavy word. It feels final, hopeless, and deeply unsettling. And yet, that’s exactly the word Paul uses to describe our spiritual state before Christ. We weren’t just struggling, lost, or weak – we were spiritually dead. No pulse, power, or way to help ourselves. We followed the world’s patterns, gave into cravings, and lived under the weight of sin. We didn’t need behavior modification – we needed resurrection.

Paul reminds us of this uncomfortable truth not to shame us but to help us see the miracle of grace. We didn’t need a motivational speech or a behavior plan. We needed a resurrection. God looked at our lifeless, rebellious state and chose to love us anyway. That truth should never grow old. You’ve been brought from death to life, not because of anything you did, but because of everything Jesus did.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What words or images come to mind when you think about spiritual death?
  2. How does recognizing your former self increase your gratitude for grace?
  3. As you think back on your life, where have you experienced the spiritual deadness of your sin?
  4. Think about your ongoing sense of gratitude and thankfulness toward God. Is it fitting for what you have been saved from?

Prayer Prompt:

“God, thank You for not leaving me in my sin. Remind me of who I was and who I am now because of You.”
