Friday – Make the Most of Every Opportunity

Written by Sam Vavzincak (Pickerington Campus)

Ephesians 5:15-20

Key Verse:
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” (15-16)

My favorite part of every summer has always been the few days my family and I spend at the beach. Growing up, those trips created some of the best memories for myself, my sister, and my parents. We loved spending days on the beach, playing putt-putt, and begging my mom to let us bring home a hermit crab. Those trips also created a lot of tension, specifically in the mornings. Every member of my family had a different idea of when we would get out of bed and get the day started. As a kid, I remember trying to wake my parents up way too early because I wanted to spend every single second that I could making the most of my vacation. I knew this trip was only a few days long, and I didn’t want to waste a moment!

This passage reminds us that, as Christians, we are to make the most of every opportunity to do good. We should be active in seeking out opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our communities. If we are not careful, we can let days and weeks go by, only focusing on meeting our own needs and helping ourselves. We should be praying for God to put situations in front of us that we can step into. We all have a limited time here on Earth, and humanity has a limited time to tell people about Jesus until he comes again. How different would our days look if we started each morning by asking God to give us opportunities to do good works for Him and kept our eyes open so that we don’t miss those opportunities when they arise?

We have a sovereign God. He places us in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and friend groups for a reason. When we are in these spaces, we need to reflect the love of our God through the ways that we serve other people and the way that we share our faith.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Think through the different places that God has chosen to put you in. Are you leveraging your influence in those places to be a light?
  2. Are you actively seeking out opportunities to serve others or just waiting for opportunities to find you?
  3. How often do you share your faith with others? What holds you back from doing it more often?

Prayer Prompt:

“God, you are sovereign. I know you have placed me where I am for a reason. Give me opportunities today to serve other people and share my faith. Help give me the courage to approach others and the wisdom to know what to say.”
